Deception Island

A chilly atoll.
DECEPTION ISLAND

DECEPTION ISLAND

If this was in the Pacific Ocean and made of coral, it would be called an atoll. This is a view of a volcano's rim. Beyond the rim is a lagoon formed when a portion of the rim further south was breached by the ocean.

Looking forward into the lagoon.
We passed by portions of the breached volcanic rim as we entered the lagoon.

The southern rim as seen from inside the lagoon.

We went ashore where the beach consisted of a very fine black volcanic sand.
The volcano is still somewhat active and the lagoon waters are in certain places warm to the touch.
In places hot enough to wade in. With the air temperature just a bit above freezing, one wants a towel and clothing to be close at hand.
